What an interesting coincidence .. or as you say too much of a coincidence. You have always been having a conversation never really knowing about it, until now, when the 'universe' decides to say hi and give you a surprise :)

Rob,

this is amazing! it was our lunch subject here at home. Just showed to my father who is also a huge science fiction fan (he has almost all the books from Carl Sagan, Isaac Asimov, Arthur C. Clarke).

I'm wondering if your and Simmons' stories aren't real at all. Aren't we (I'm including myself in the "imbroglio") ancient greek storytellers reincarnated in the Greek future (our "present")? To "solve" the actual problems with old knowledge. The post-ancient-modern approach. ;)

As Pausanias - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pausanias_(geographer) - , which have wrote and described in details the Ancient Greek Agonistic Festivals, specially the one in Olympia.

Just to add one more thing, the place where the hippodrome lies was just discovered in Ancient Olympia (http://www.uni-mainz.de/eng/12622.php). The hippodrome and the competitions were described by Pausanias and others (they have the name of the winners of the Olympic Festivals engraved in stones), but no one knew until now where it lied or even if it really existed.

maybe a conjunction in the stars, the via lactea... Because the Agonistic Festivals (Olympia) occurred in 4 and 4 years as a form of marking calendar changes, and they used the stars' position to mark these changes. Mount Kronos (the TIME) lies in front of the Ancient Olympia site, and served as a place to send smoke signs to the travelers. We are in an Olympic year. 2000 was also an Olympic year.

I can't even imagine why, but we can speculate :)

best
